A Different World Festival – 6th August 2016
Have you ever been to a music festival? Have you ever wanted to go to a particular music festival but couldn’t?
Many of our pupils would like to go to a music festival but are unable to due to their learning difficulties or their additional needs as many of the music festivals aren’t geared to our pupils.
One of our pupils, Sam, has always wanted to go to Reading Festival but due to his needs, has not been able to. However, his parents wanted to give Sam and other young people with learning difficulties and additional needs the opportunity to experience a music festival and as such, have been working hard over the last year to make Sam’s dream come true.
On 6th August 2016, Sam and other young people like him will be able to experience a music festival as his parents have organises an ‘accessible rock festival’
Here is their story…
”
We are the parents of Sam Turner in Year 10 and are excited to tell you about our rock festival we are organising for later this year.
A Different World Festival will be, what we think, the South’s first fully accessible rock festival. It’s aimed at adults and young people with additional needs. Whatever you’ve got – we can cope with it! We have some fantastic bands booked and we will have all the usual festival things – food, drink, stalls as well as a dog stop for assistance dogs, a chill out space/sensory area, Soundabout music workshops, a dance dome, Messyclub arts & craft tent, inflatable games the list goes on!! The music won’t be uncomfortably loud, there will be no flashing lights, there will be plenty of room for everyone to move around and the site will be completely wheelchair accessible. This has been inspired by Sam wanting to go to Reading Festival but not being able to cope with it. As you know Brookfields hold a very successful BrookFest every year.
We are proud to tell you that we have become a partner with Reading Borough Council and are now part of Reading Year of Culture. Reading Council want to run this in partnership with us as an annual event.
We need your help to get this off the ground by spreading the word and coming along. This is going to be a truly fantastic day but we need your support to get it going. Everyone one is welcome – you don’t need an additional need to come.
This is a great and unique idea that we are very excited about. Music and the arts should be available to everyone and we want to make this happen as ‘special’ young people like ours deserve to experience a music festival as much as anyone else”
