Courses for the Family
Brookfields School has a strong philosophy, ethos and approach to engaging and supporting parents and other family members of children with a range of Special Needs.The courses are not only open to those parents whose child already attends the school but also to those parents whose children we support through the Specialist Inclusion Support Service and those parents who have a child with SEN in a West Berkshire school.
We offer a range of workshops and courses over an academic year to:
Parents of pupils attending Brookfields School
Parents of pupils we support through the Specilaist Inclusion Support Service
Parents of pupils with Special Needs in local West Berkshire schools
The aims of the courses is to empower parents to being able to support their child as fully as possible. The courses are fun, informative and imaginative!
The courses that we currently offer are:
Families Matter
This is a 6 week course run in the evenings. Many parents of children with special needs may feel isolated and unsure of what is available to them. The aim of this course is for parents to meet other parents of pupils with special needs and sensitively explore some of the issues that affect all of us in some way.
Communication – It Takes Two
This course is run by the schools Speech and Language Therapist and members of the Communication Team and run over 5 evenings. Effective communication is fundamental for learning and the course give participants tailored skills, knowledge and understanding so that they can confidently support their child’s communication.
Understanding and Managing Behaviour
Over a 6 week period parents gain a greater understanding of behaviour and in particular, in relation to their child. A range of strategies are explored based on the identification of the purpose of the behaviour and our response to it. The newly gained strategies can be used at home to encourage appropriate and positive behaviours for all children and family members!
Half Day Workshops
We offer half day workshops for parents on
- The use of Signs
- The use of Symbols
- Online Courses including face2face workshops
We know that not all parents are able to attend face to face workshops at school so we offer a wide range of online courses to parents that they are able to complete in their own time at their own pace.
